Congress to protest against ED charges on Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in National Herald case | cliQ Latest

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a prosecution complaint against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others on Tuesday, accusing them in the ongoing National Herald case. The Congress party has strongly denounced these charges, describing them as politically motivated, and announced plans to hold nationwide protests in front of ED offices and district-level government offices across India. This move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing legal and political battle.

The chargesheet, filed by the ED, also implicates Congress leaders Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, and several firms. The case centers around allegations of financial mismanagement linked to the National Herald newspaper, which was founded by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1938. The Delhi Rouse Avenue Court is set to hear the matter on April 25, where arguments on cognizance will take place. The ED’s charges include violations under Sections 403, 406, and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with fraud, criminal breach of trust, and cheating.

The Congress party, in response, has condemned what it calls the Modi government’s ‘draconian actions,’ accusing the ruling party of misusing state institutions to target the opposition. Party leaders argue that these actions are a clear example of vendetta politics designed to intimidate the Congress leadership. Congress has been vocal about the injustice of the charges, asserting that the National Herald was a symbol of India’s struggle for independence and continues to stand for justice and democratic ideals.

Senior Congress leaders, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal, have vehemently criticized the charges, calling them baseless. Singhvi dismissed the case as lacking legal merit, claiming that the government is only exposing itself through this politically motivated campaign. Sibal further accused the BJP of misusing the law to trap opposition leaders, arguing that this was a part of a larger effort to undermine democracy and silence dissent.

In contrast, BJP leaders, including Sudhanshu Trivedi and Gaurav Vallabh, have defended the ED’s actions, stating that the charges are based on legal procedures, and the Congress party should refrain from politicizing the issue. They pointed out that the case has been ongoing since 2012, with the Delhi High Court initiating the legal proceedings through a PIL in 2013.
