The ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League has served up thrilling cricketing action so far. The 18th installment has seen everything up until now - run-fests, low-scoring thrillers, and some fantastic catches being taken. The race to the playoffs though has narrowed substantially. After 60 matches, there is only one spot up for grabs now.
Four sides have been eliminated from already. Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Kolkata Knight Riders are the ones that are no longer in the race. Below is a short analysis behind the early exit of the aforementioned teams.
IPL 2025 Eliminated teams ranked by worst performance 4. Kolkata Knight RidersAn abandoned clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru due to persistent showers meant Kolkata Knight Riders were knocked out of the tournament after winning the previous edition in convincing style. The defending champions had a season to forget. Retained players such as Venkatesh Iyer and Sunil Narine did not step up with the bat.
Another key factor was that they let a few games slip, ones they should have ideally won. They crumbled from winning positions to end up just short. Seasoned veterans such as Andre Russell didn't show up as expected. The lack of a dependable overseas quick - like the calibre of Mitchell Starc from last season - made matters worse for KKR.

3. Rajasthan Royals
A crushing 100-run drubbing at the hands of Mumbai Indians at home made the second team in IPL 2025 to get ousted from the race to the playoffs. They were the only side other than KKR to have retained six players ahead of the season during the mega auction. Fast-forward to their current state, it seems as if spending INR 79 crore out of the total purse of INR 120 crore wasn't the wisest gamble to proceed with.
Sanju Samson getting sidelined due to injury meant the baton of captaincy was passed to Riyan Parag. Despite doing his bit as a player, the inexperience in leadership was quite evident with RR losing six out of eight games under Parag's captaincy. Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel failed to apply the finishing touches due to which RR failed to get over the line on more than one occasion. Excessive shuffling of Indian pacers didn't help RR's cause either.
2. Sunrisers HyderabadSunrisers Hyderabad stood out as one of the most hyped sides prior to the commencement of the season. However, they disappointed severely. The runners-up of the previous edition saw their playoff hopes dashed when their game against Delhi Capitals was interrupted by rain halfway through the clash. The opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were a diminshed reflection of their past selves.
Ishan Kishan's first 10 innings produced only one noteworthy ton, his first for SRH in which the southpaw announced himself. He has really struggled to get going post that. As far as SRH's spinners are concerned, as of May 19, they possessed the worst economy rate, average, and strike rate amongst spinners of all the participating franchises in the league this season.

1. Chennai Super Kingsunderperformed severely to be the first side to be knocked out of this year's edition. A narrow loss to Punjab Kings at home put an end to their misery. There were quite a few parameters on which CSK lacked. After an impressive IPL 2024, Rachin Ravindra had a lackluster 2025, playing at a strike rate of just 128.18. The same could be said for Devon Conway.

CSK could not make the most of their home games. They ended up losing five out of their six games at home. There was no other bowler to support Noor Ahmad in his exploits. Matheesha Pathirana bowled well in patches, but was not consistent enough. Ruturaj Gaikwad getting ruled out due to injury brought about another wave of disorder in the unit.
