Tokyo: Honda Cars India has announced a major expansion of its India portfolio, with plans to launch 10 new models by 2030—seven of which will be SUVs—as the Japanese automaker strengthens its play in the rapidly growing Indian passenger vehicle market.
Honda’s top global executives—Toshihiro Mibe, Toshiro Kuwahara, and Noriya Kaihara—spoke to Indian media at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, reaffirming commitment to India as its focus market.
The company, which currently sells three models here (only one, an SUV), will introduce a mix of mass-market vehicles made in India and premium models imported as completely built units (CBUs). Imported CBUs, typically global best-sellers, will be priced higher due to import duties.
SUV Growth Push
“Sub-4-metre SUVs are a major growth opportunity, and we are preparing to enter this segment,” said Takashi Nakajama, President & CEO, Honda Motor India. I will have to propose to my colleagues the investment plan needed he added.
Closer Ties with Two-Wheeler Division
Honda will leverage its successful two-wheeler business for deeper engagement with Indian consumers and expand partnerships with local suppliers.
Electric and Hybrid Drive
The Honda 0 Alpha electric model will be manufactured in India, with exports planned for Japan and other Asian markets said Toshiro Kuwahara, President and CEO , Honda Motor Co. Batteries for this vehicle—produced in Indonesia with CATL technology—will be imported to India. Honda is betting big on an expanded range of electric and hybrid models, including options beyond its current City e:HEV hybrid. Depending on demand, the 0 Alpha could also feature autonomous driving tech powered by its proprietary ASIMO OS.
