Spice Adulteration Test: Spices are specially used in Indian kitchen. Many types of spices like turmeric, coriander, chilli, cumin, garam masala etc. are used in the kitchen, which not only enhance the taste but are also beneficial for health. But nowadays adulteration in the spices available in the market has become a common problem. These adulterations not only reduce the quality of spices but are also harmful for health. In such a situation, it is important to identify the right spices. Let us know how to identify adulterated spices?

How to identify turmeric?

Mainly yellow soil or lead chromate is mixed in turmeric. To identify it, put a spoonful of turmeric in a glass of hot water. Now leave it for some time without stirring. If the turmeric settles down and the water remains clear, then the turmeric is pure. If the water turns yellow or a colored layer starts floating on top, then it may be adulterated.

Identification of red chillies

Mainly brick powder, salt powder and colour are mixed in it. To identify it, put a pinch of chilli powder in a glass of water. If the powder starts floating on top or a layer of different colours is formed at the bottom, then it may be adulterated.

How to identify coriander powder

Adulterated coriander powder contains powder of dried grass or leaves. To check this, rub a little coriander powder on your palm. If it smells like soil or leaves, then understand that it is not completely pure.

How to identify black pepper

Dried papaya seeds are mixed in black pepper. If you want to identify it, then put black pepper in water. Real black pepper will settle down, while papaya seeds will float.

How to identify cumin?

Identify cumin seeds by grass seeds or artificial colour. To identify this, take cumin seeds in your hand and look at them in good light. If you see colour stuck to it or if colour comes out when put in water, then it is adulterated.
