Manfield Town have confirmed that Lucas Akins has returned to their squad following his release from prison. The 36-year-old was jailed in April forcausing the death of a cyclist by careless or inconsiderate driving.
Akinshit Adrian Daniel with his Mercedes in Huddersfield in March 2022. The 33-year-old tragically died 10 days later. The veteran striker pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 14 months at Leeds Crown Court, with part of that sentence being served on licence.
Akins continued to play for Mansfield last season after pleading guilty to the crime on March 4. The forward's contract with the Stags expired at the end of last season, but he will now be re-integrated, the club have confirmed.
In a statement, the League One club have said that they believe Akins "should be afforded the opportunity to return to professional action in accordance with rehabilitation and reintegration principles", as well as expressing their condolences to Daniel's family.

The statement read: "Mansfield Town Football Club can confirm that it has retained the registration of forward Lucas Akins, who has rejoined the first team squad following the conclusion of a custodial sentence. This follows a road traffic accident in March 2022, which tragically resulted in the death of Mr Adrian Daniel.
"The club wishes to once again extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Daniel. Our thoughts remain with all those impacted by this tragic accident.
"In line with principles of rehabilitation and reintegration, the club is of the view that Lucas, having served his sentence, should be afforded the opportunity to resume his professional career.
"Lucas has reiterated his profound remorse for the events of that day and fully recognises the enduring impact this tragedy has had on the family of Mr Daniel.
"Mansfield Town has provided support to Lucas throughout his time in custody and following the conclusion of judicial proceedings, and will continue to offer appropriate support as he returns to the first team environment."
Akins was a Mansfield player when the fatal crash happened three-and-a-half years ago and continued to feature for the club during the trial. Daniel's family criticised Akins for not pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.
