While both South Indian and Bollywood cinema have made immense contributions to Indian cinema, heroines rarely commanded fees higher than their male co-stars—until Sheela Selin came along. Entering the film industry at just 17, Sheela has appeared in over 475 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, and often charged more than the heroes she starred opposite.
Sheela began her journey in theater at age 13, making her film debut with Paasam. Her first Malayalam film was Bhagyajathakam, and over her illustrious career, she has starred in classics such as Chemmeen, Velutha Katharina, Kadathunattu Makan, and Kannapan Unni. Sheela is best known for her legendary pairing with Prem Nazir, acting opposite him in 130 films—a feat recognized by the Guinness World Records.
After a 22-year hiatus, Sheela returned to the screen in 2003 with Manasinakkare and received critical acclaim for Akale in 2005, earning the National Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has also received the prestigious JC Daniel Award, directed films between 1970 and 1989, and penned screenplays for two movies. Over her career, she has won more than 12 awards.
