Britain's best airport has been revealed - with over five million passengers served every year and low cancellations - and it's not Heathrow. Liverpool John Lennon Airport was named the best airport in the country by The Telegraph, which conducted a study of the 30 busiest hubs. The ranking was based on around 40 metrics, including cancellation percentage and the average Google review score.
Liverpool John Lennon serves 5,074,266 passengers annually, much less than Heathrow's 83,882,140 - the busiest and biggest airport in Britain. Surprisingly, Heathrow took fourth place, with an average Google review score of four. Last year, 1.73% of flights were cancelled and 67% left on time.
Liverpool John Lennon, however, saw 76% of flights depart on time just 0.7% were cancelled. When flights were delayed, it was for an average of just 14 minutes.
Boasting the lowest cancellation rate in the top 10, the airport also had average security and passport queues of 11 minutes.
This is the second year it's clinched the top spot after Which? surveyed nearly 4,000 people on their airport experiences in 2024.
It got a customer score of 83%, with passengers reporting a "first-class experience, from start to finish".
Parking was hassle-free and "reasonably priced", with a short walk to the terminal. Here, they encountered "friendly and helpful" staff and whizzed through security in an average of just 11 minutes.
Liverpool John Lennon got five stars in queues at check-in and at security, four stars in queues at bag drop, passport control, baggage reclaim, staffing and toilets and three stars in the range of shops, prices in shops and seating.
It also has a fascinating history, transforming into a vital factory during WWII. Originally called Speke Airport, it was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force and known as RAF Speke during the war.
A "shadow factory" was built by the airport to produce Bristol Blenheims and 1,070 Handley Page Halifax bombers.
Lockheed Aircraft Corporation assembled many types of planes at the airport, including Hudsons and Mustang fighters, that had been shipped from the US in parts to Liverpool Docks.
