Panampilly Nagar struggles with tidal flooding

Kochi: Panampilly Nagar, known for its upscale residential area and charming commercial centres, is grappling with a growing threat—tidal flooding. Frequent sea surges now cause regular waterlogging, disrupting daily life and hindering local businesses.

For residents, the rising water is more than just an inconvenience; it poses serious health risks. Contaminated floodwater often mixes with drinking water stored in ground-level tanks, forcing families to rely on costly tanker-supplied water. "Waterlogging happens every month. Our kids struggle to wade through muddy water just to reach school," said Bhama, a resident.

Locals say authorities have done little to mitigate the issue. Even the local councillor, Anjana Teacher, councillor from Panampilly Nagar division acknowledges the problem. "Perandoor Canal is choked with silt and dirt. Without proper dredging, the water remains stagnant and blocked directly contributing to flooding. The canal mouth at Thevara is also blocked, preventing proper drainage into the backwaters. Cleaning has now begun, and we hope it will bring some relief."

Earlier projects aimed at solving the issue remain unimplemented. "Back in 2002, a study by Annamalai University outlined solutions to tackle waterlogging, but little progress was made," said VK Thankaraj, a former councillor. He also noted that encroachments have narrowed the canal, making the situation worse, especially during ‘Vrischika Veliyettam'—the high-tide season in Jan and Feb. Several parts of Panampilly Nagar, including the SBI junction, are regularly inundated.

As Kochi continues to expand along its coast, the recurring waterlogging in Panampilly Nagar highlights the need for sustainable infrastructure solutions that can keep pace with the city's evolving landscape.
