India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant is not part of the playing XI for the final Test against England after suffering a broken foot during the fourth Test at Manchester. Despite the injury from Chris Woakes' yorker, Pant courageously returned to score 54 runs.
Taking his place in the India playing XI at The Oval is Dhruv Jurel. He had come in as the wicketkeeper when Pant had copped a blow to his index finger at Lord's and again at Old Trafford. This time, though, he will also hold responsibility with the bat.
Pant, meanwhile, had thanked supporters on Instagram and expressed his eagerness to return to cricket while beginning his rehabilitation process.
On social media, Pant shared his recovery journey: "Appreciate all the love and good wishes coming my way. It's been a real source of strength. I will begin rehab once my fracture heals and I am slowly settling into the process. Staying patient, following routines and giving it my 100 per cent. Playing for the country has always been the proudest moment of my life. Can't wait to be back doing what I love."
The dramatic incident occurred on day one when Pant was struck by a toe-crushing yorker in the 68th over. Blood was visible when he removed his boot, and the pain forced him to leave the field on a golf cart at 37 runs. However, he surprised everyone by returning the next day before lunch with India at 314/6.
In a remarkable display of determination, Pant hit his 90th Test six, equaling Virender Sehwag's record for India. He reached a gutsy half-century before Jofra Archer eventually dismissed him.
India's head coach Gautam Gambhir highly praised Pant's courage, stating, "One thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something that Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well."
Later, BCCI named Narayan Jagadeesan as Pant's replacement for the final Test.
