NAVI MUMBAI: For the second time in two days, a team choked on the cusp of victory in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. After India messed up their chase against England at Indore, it was Bangladesh’s turn to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Needing just 12 runs off the last two overs while chasing 203, Bangladesh fell short by seven runs at the DY Patil Stadium , which hosted its first WC match, on Monday night. The hero of Sri Lanka’s comefrom-behind win, which kept them alive in the competition, was captain Chamari Athapaththu, who conceded just one run in the final over, which saw four wickets fall in four balls, including a run-out.

Bangladesh needed nine in the final over, but Athapaththu, bowling her off-spinners, trapped Rabeya Khan (1) lbw off the first ball, before Nahida Akter was run out off the second ball. When, in a state of panic, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana (77, 98b, 6x4) holed out to long-off off the third ball, Bangladesh’s botchedup chase looked for real.
Athapaththu then had Marufa Akter (0) lbw for a duck to make it four wickets in four balls, before closing out the match with a dot ball. Leading by example, the 35-yearold Athapaththu produced a brilliant all-round performance, taking four for 42 in 10 overs besides scoring a brisk 46 (43b, 6x4, 2x6) while opening the innings.
The heart-breaking defeat saw Bangladesh being knocked out of the World Cup, with Sri Lanka, who recorded their first win in the competition, now playing Pakistan in their final league match at Colombo on Friday. Bangladesh will now take on India at this venue on Sunday, Oct 26. Fired by half-centuries by Sultana (77, 98b, 6x4) and Sharmin Akhter (64 not out, 103b, 4x4, 1x6) and the duo’s 82-run partnership in 120 balls for the fourth wicket, Bangladesh appeared to be coasting to the target, but it hurt them that Akhter had to leave the field due to cramps.
Earlier, a fine spell of leg-spin bowling from 18-year-old Shorna Akter (three for 27 in 10 overs) helped Bangladesh bowl out Sri Lanka for 202 after Hasini Perera struck a career-best 85 (off 99 balls, 13x4s, 1x6s).
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 202 (Hasini 85, Athapaththu 46, Shorna 3-27) bt Bangladesh 195 for 9 in 50 overs (Sharmin Akhter 64 retd hurt, Nigar Sultana 77; Chamari Athapaththu 4/42) by seven runs
